The Details
Do I need any Mahjong experience for the beginner series?
Not at all. Most students are learning Mahjong for the very first time. Classes are designed specifically for beginners, and we'll walk through everything step-by-step.
Do I need to bring anything?
Nope. Mahjong sets, racks, tiles, instructional materials, and practice tools are provided. Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn.
How many classes does it take to learn Mahjong?
Most people need at least two to three sessions to feel comfortable with the basics and several games of practice to build confidence. Mahjong is easy to learn but offers endless opportunities to improve your strategy over time.
Is Mahjong difficult to learn?
Mahjong has a lot of moving parts at first, but beginners are often surprised by how quickly it starts to make sense. The goal isn't perfection—it's progress. We focus on understanding the game while having fun.
What version of Mahjong do you teach?
The Gilded Tile teaches American Mahjong using National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules and the annual NMJL card.
What if I make mistakes?
You will. Everyone does. Mistakes are part of learning Mahjong. Questions are encouraged, and nobody is expected to know everything on day one.
How many people are in a class?
Classes are intentionally kept small so everyone receives plenty of individual attention and hands-on practice.
Will I be able to play after the beginner series?
Yes. You'll understand the tiles, the card, the Charleston, basic gameplay, and table etiquette. Most students leave feeling comfortable joining beginner-friendly open play sessions.
What is the age range of participants?
Most students are adults of all ages. Mahjong attracts everyone from young professionals to retirees because it's social, strategic, and fun.
Is Mahjong really having a moment?
Absolutely. Mahjong has experienced tremendous growth across the country, particularly among women looking for a social activity that combines learning, strategy, and community.
Can I come by myself?
Please do. Many participants attend alone and leave having met new people. One of our favorite things about Mahjong is the community that forms around the table.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes. Private lessons, small group lessons, corporate events, social gatherings, and private Mahjong parties are available.
Do you offer events for experienced players?
Yes. In addition to beginner instruction, The Gilded Tile hosts open play events, specialty workshops, and tournaments for players looking to continue building their skills.
What if I miss a class?
Because classes build on one another, make-up sessions cannot always be guaranteed. If you know you'll miss a class, please contact us and we'll do our best to find a solution.
What is your cancellation policy?
Class registrations reserve a limited seat and are generally non-refundable. If circumstances require a change, please contact us as early as possible.
